First a big THANK to all who attended and volunteered for our first Ocean Defenders Alliance fundraising event this last April at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Seashepard’s Captain Paul Watson was a big draw (with 200+ likeminded folks) and his keynote presentation was both educational, and inspirational. Net proceeds after expenses were about $6,500. A much needed resource for our dock fees, fuel costs, boat maintenance, and keeping us afloat.

We’re already planning a more local and more diver-oriented event for late this Fall. A dive festival at Terranea Resort, the very popular and beautiful dive site commonly referred to as Old Marineland. The idea is for a number of events geared toward divers and boaters who enjoy the local waters and the underwater playgrounds we all love.

We need your to input and help to make this a fun and well attended event. We’re looking for ideas on what you think might be fun? The list of events heretofore considered include:

- A parking lot gear swap with donated dive gear and accessories.
- A silent auction of quality gear, dive trips and oceans artwork, Etc.
- An underwater photo contest with different categories and prizes.
- A potluck bake sale (meat free preferred).
- A live (big name) band with dancing and a divers social with a “Fishnets are for Ladies” theme.
- A golf tournament on the beautiful 9-hole course on site.
- A Scuba’lympics event.
- An underwater (biodegradable, egg?) hunt.
- A couple likeminded “celebrities” for meet and greet.
- And ?????????? (Your ideas here!).

None of these concepts are set in stone, and this is evolving as we go. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! It’s your event, what do you wanna see? What we’ll need is donations for all of the above, volunteer help to organize and run these events, and a GREAT turnout.
