Essentially it becomes broken glass at that point. IMO it would be the caught in surge and current and scattered. I'm assume they considered it? Adult Macrocystis (king of the kelp forest) grows HUGE holdfasts with their own ecosystems inside and distinct critters to it. I've observed them dissected at Wrigley and it's fascinating.
