On a recent dive trip to Los Frailes, we found large numbers of spiny puffers just inside the 6-inch high "surf zone". As we would snorkle the area, those puffers would sometimes spook and jam into the shallows, sometimes running right up on to the sand where they would start inflating. If they were lucky and a wave came in before the gulls got them they'd get pulled back into the deeper water on the back wash, bob around until they deflated and continue on their merry puffer way. Otherwise they became the ala carte menu item for the vultures and gulls and judging from the number of little spiny bodies on the beach they were pretty much a standard menu item.

Uummmmm! Puffer on the beach!
