The diving bell is certainly not new --it was used extensively in the 16th & 17th century for salvage work. The invention of heavy gear obsoleted the bell. Dr George Bass used bells as a communication telephone booth beginning in the 1950-60s (?) for his underwater exploration and excavation. The LA County Swat Team under the leadership of Sgt Frank Waldron also had a clear 4 foot Plexiglass dome constructed for the same purpose. Once again the development of effective UW communication systems obsoleted the need for Dive Bells. They are now underwater play toys..... sdm
