Southern California MPAs |

The California Fish & Game Commission just released the proposed changes to the Fish and Game code that would establish the Southern California MPAs. The changes are not as extensive as many people would like, and others feared. It does not change anything at San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, & Santa Barbara Islands. It also includes a very common sense approach to San Clemente by declaring that the areas now closed by the Navy are de facto MPAs. It closes no areas at San Nicolas Island, but makes the area Begg Rock a preserve. At Catalina Island it establishes many new areas, but not as extensive as many had feared. Most of the areas are Marine Conservation Areas, not preserves. These areas allow the take of pelagic fish (bonita, mackerel, yellowtail, white seabass) but nothing else. Chris
