A new, all volunteer, ocean-research organization has been formed in Southern California. The Catalina Marine Society (www.catalinamarinesociety.org) is dedicated to increasing our understanding of all aspects of the ocean surrounding our coasts and islands, from marine biology to physical oceanography. The Society is membership supported and governed, incorporated in the State of California and is a recognized 501(c)(3) charity.
We have worked with many of institutions in Southern California and are currently studying internal waves found off the islands with the goal of understanding currents and ultimately nutrient availability. We are in the planning stages for a Santa Ana-wind-effect-on-ocean-mixing study (using satellite and UCLA data) and are about to begin our pilot program for long-term monitoring of ocean physical and biological characteristics near the Wrigley Marine Science Center at Two Harbors, Santa Catalina.
We are looking to expand our research activities and welcome new members and volunteers in support of all aspects of this exciting new organization. We need data gatherers, data analysts and scientists, fundraisers, event planners and staffers, magazine editors and article authors, website design and support, equipment fabricators and maintainers, boaters and appropriately certified scuba divers. All volunteers donate their services for their love of the ocean in an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie. Of course, out-of-pocket costs may be tax deductible, as are membership dues, but you do not have to be a member to volunteer. Ultimately, the number and mix of people that support the Society will determine the scope of projects that we can undertake.
Please consider applying for membership in the Society or volunteering your services.
