Need recommendation for school-basic open water SCUBA certification

Hello all experienced divers and dive instructors.

I need to find a good school for my 19 year old to get an open water certification this summer. When I got mine 30 years ago a lot of classroom instruction and testing was involved and the book was carefully covered. Lots of questions were answered by highly experienced dive instructors. There was extensive pool instruction to get comfortable with the gear as well before the open water dives.

Seems like it is common to use the PADI online course or some other self directed home instruction. Considering the potential dangers of diving, this seems a bit like teaching flying by book and then handing over the airplane ( I went to flight school too so I know what a failure that would be).

We live in Mission Viejo so somewhere within a reasonable drive is needed.
