On February 10, 1950, Ensign Charles E. Butler, 22, and his wing man took off from North Island NAS flying two Navy F4U-4B Corsairs on a training flight up the coast. During the return leg, the formation flew into cloud cover. Butler was never seen or heard from again. The Navy conducted an extensive surface search but no evidence of the plane or pilot was found.

Ensign Butler's Corsair was recently located and identified off the coast near Dana Point. From the shattered condition of the wreckage we surmise Ensign Butler died on impact.
