Missing F4U-4B Corsair found off Dana Point |
Posted by Kendall Raine on January 11, 2011 at 16:12:33: On February 10, 1950, Ensign Charles E. Butler, 22, and his wing man took off from North Island NAS flying two Navy F4U-4B Corsairs on a training flight up the coast. During the return leg, the formation flew into cloud cover. Butler was never seen or heard from again. The Navy conducted an extensive surface search but no evidence of the plane or pilot was found. Ensign Butler's Corsair was recently located and identified off the coast near Dana Point. From the shattered condition of the wreckage we surmise Ensign Butler died on impact. Photo's, dive report and description of research efforts can be found at http://www.ub88.org Video coming soon.
