From Daily News: 61-year-old man dies on certification dive near Santa Catalina Island SANTA CATALINA ISLAND - A 61-year-old man died Sunday while on a certification dive with his instructor near the west end of Santa Catalina Island, leaving the coroner to determine the reason, a sheriff's sergeant said. The man, whose name has not been released, was diving in the Arrow Point area at about 3 p.m., Sgt. Fred Keelin said. The instructor reported ascending with the victim when the man's body went limp, Keelin said. The instructor brought him to the surface and immediately attempted to resuscitate him while swimming to their nearby dive boat, Keelin said. Dive boat personnel administered CPR for about 20 minutes until paramedics arrived to transport the man to the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, he said. There, the attending physician pronounced the diver dead at about 4:40 p.m. Lt. Joe Bale in the L.A. County Office of the Coroner said the man's identity would be confirmed and an autopsy performed after the case is assigned to an investigator.
