Sounds like this may turn into a hunter vs non hunter topic. I can tell you that coming from a group of dedicated bug divers that cover as much ground as possible, an octo rig just gets clogged with sand and causes drag and snags the kelp, I currently dive with no one that uses one so I see Sea Hunts point. But the original topic seems to be more about running out of air than gear. I know no one nor have I ever ran out of air, and sometimes use the 300 psi rule instead of 500psi rule when my dives are shallower than 25' for the whole dive. Running out of air is simply unacceptable and that is the first rule I was taught.
