The mackerel are Green Jack, Caranx caballus, also known as the horse jack. By the schooling behavior and other features of the baitball, Patrick believes they are sardines, not topsmelt. My apologies for the misinformation! We need to be as rigorous at identifying fish as we are about nudibranchs. :)
