Sorry to hear that you have been tethered topside , I didn't know. I wish that someone could study "dry gill". Everyone that I know who avidly dives becomes afflicted by it when faced with prolonged periods out of the water. The main symptom seems to be a "basic need to dive", and if this need goes unmet there is an entire complex of unpleasant emotional, and maybe even physical, maladies that occur, your "take up knitting or go on a killing spree" is one description of the syndrome. I have seen it over and over in friends and in myself so I have no doubt it is a "real thing".
