California Ships to Reefs (CSTR) was delighted to learn this week that the federal government agreed CSTR’s top choice for a reefing ship is suitable and available for that purpose.

The federal Maritime Administration (MARAD) gave the go ahead on two ships that CSTR asked them to review for reefing opportunities. The USS Kawishiwi is CSTR’s first choice for its next reefing project and targeted for possible deployment near Dana Point. That ship and USS Hassayampa were both deemed suitable and available for reefing by MARAD. Three other ships presented for review were rejected as not suitable.

CSTR partnered with the California Department of Fish and Game in asking MARAD to make this review. The state’s willingness to join with CSTR in requesting MARAD’s consideration is another giant step towards creating new reefs along the California coast.

“We’re grateful that the California Department of Fish and Game understands the value of revitalizing our oceans with artificial reefs and has been so helpful in bringing our cause to the federal government,” said Joel Geldin, CSTR’s Chairman and CEO.

“Our next step is to visit the vessel and do a bow to stern review, making sure we know everything that is necessary to clean the ship and make it environmentally safe for sinking,” said Geldin. “CSTR is committed to ensuring that our ship meets or exceeds all environmental standards for artificial reefing.”

California Ships to Reefs is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation seeking to reef surplus ships as artificial reefs, bringing diving and fishing tourism to local ports in California and enhancing the ocean environment.
