A 61-foot fishing vessel sank off Catalina Island but the six people aboard were safely rescued from the water, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said today.

A distress call from the Midnight Star was received around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Trent Kelly told City News Service.

"There were six mariners on board when the ship sank and all of the people ended up in the water," Kelly said. "But a nearby ship picked them up and no one was injured."

The Midnight Star sank in 90 feet of water, Kelly said.

The Coast Guard cutter Narwahl was already at the scene and a Coast Guard helicopter will head to Catalina at first light, he added.

"They will search for debris from the ship and respond to any environmental threat the ship may present," Kelly said.

There was no immediate word on what may have caused the ship to sink, he said.
