Just an update on Dive the Coast:

BACKGROUND:
A bunch of divers from across the state are coming together to organize a mass dive along the entire California coast to raise funds for ocean-conservation organizations. You can find out more it at our web site, www.DiveTheCoast.com. Also, here's a brief article in California Diver magazine: http://californiadiver.com/dive-the-coast/

OCTOBER: DIVE THE BAY
As we continue doing outreach, we're planning a "Dive the Bay" event next month in Monterey. Some divers in LA and San Diego are talking about coming up for it - I'd love to see a good contingent from around the state to show "solidarity" for the 2013 event.

On Oct. 1, some of us in the Santa Cruz area are going to head out from Monterey on the Silver Prince for a short dive. The goal is to figure out how long the average diver can get on one tank of air.

Say it's one mile. We'll multiply that by the number of teams we have signed up for the Oct. 15 dive - I think the boat can carry a max of 20 divers, so that'd be 10 miles. So on Oct. 15, the Silver Prince will load up the divers in the early morning, head 10 miles north from Monterey, then the boat and kayakers will drop the divers off at one-mile intervals and follow them back to Monterey.

Since the boat doesn't have enough space for the number of divers we'd need to cover the entire distance (22 nautical miles), we're looking for 10-12 diver pairs who could cover the rest of the distance from shore. If you're interested in getting involved, email kim@divethecoast.com or info@divethecoast.com and someone will get in touch.

If we can't find enough shore divers, then we'll probably just have to take another weekend or two to cover the entire bay, with Oct. 15 being the first day.

Best,

Kim White
