We had a nearly identical experience several years back on our boat out at Anacapa, and actually took some video of the little guy. We showed it to Ralph Collier at the Shark Research Committee and he said "You were probably about 2 seconds from seeing a predation." There was a reason that little guy wanted out of the water so insistently. Chris Fallows in South Africa has said there are times the seals use his boat from cover when they're being pursued.
