CLARIFICATION--THE LACO PARKS & REC's LIFEGUARD DIVISION IS ACTUALLY IN CHARGE OF THE PROGRAMS. (NOT THE LACO FD LIFEGUARD DIVISION)>
All 3 programs, UICC, ADP, and the 3Rs are alive and well. The first 3Rs is on May 12, at Redondo Beach and ADP will start on July 7, 2012. By way of background, these programs have always been part of the LACO Parks & Rec Underwater Unit. For the past several years the LACO Parks & Rec outsourced the running of these programs to a private contractor who "owns" the lacountyscuba.com website which posted the message. The LACO Parks & Rec. terminated the contract 2 months ago with the private contractor and turned over the programs to their OWN LACO Parks & Rec. Lifeguard Division. (this is NOT part of the LACO FD) effective July 1, 2012 (which is the first day of LA County's Fiscal year). course started the programs (and recreational scuba). The LACO Parks & Rec. Lifeguard Division have numerous UICC alumni in their ranks and will be re-instating the LACUIA (Los Angeles County Underwater Instructors Association) to assist them in planning and staffing the various programs. The LACO Parks & Rec Lifeguards who will be directly involved in the management of the programs are all former UICC graduates and LA County instructors and they have expressed a desire to grow and develop the programs with no particular affiliation to any agency (unlike the former contractor who ran UICC and ADP strictly as NAUI programs.) The LACO Parks & Rec Lifeguard Division is currently in the process of completing the transfer of the programs, files, etc. from the contractor. I expect that a formal press release will be issued in the future and a new website established. In the meantime you can direct queries to Gary Hild, Senior Lifeguard, LACO Parks & Rec Lifeguard Division and new Underwater Unit Programs Director at lacounderwaterunit@gmail.com.
