Do not listen to any fools that want to disrespect you because you want to pursue legal and educated underwater hunting. Those people can just not hunt, but please stop trying to take away the rights of hunters to enjoy a fresh sea food meal. A word of advice though, learn and follow the FnG rules. Most of the regs are designed to ensure the long term viability of a species, so follow all size and season limits. Areas? Forget Laguna, for now, most of Palos Verdes is open to hunting, Redondo area, and all the Islands still have areas to hunt, then there is freediving for open ocean fish like White Sea Bass, Yellowtail, and Tuna. If spearing is not your thing then there are still many areas to hunt Lobster. Just take the time to learn the areas open to hunt and then species and size limits and you are ready to go.
