Margaret, Merry, and I were able to take advantage of nice conditions and do a dive this morning at a dive site that will be nameless. Merry was kind enough to show me where to find octopus nests.

Yellow crab with eggs

New octopus eggs (about the size of a grain of sushi rice).

Octopus eggs with eyes

Eyes close up

Ling cod

Tritona festiva

Margaret's great picture of the mother octopus guarding the nest. She says her Sola focus light (red) isn't detected by the octopus and the eyes remain wide open.

Margaret's sculpin

Margaret's Mola eye. There was a school of Mola molas being cleaned on the dive site. Many of the fish were missing fins where marauding sealions had chewed them off. One, intact, Mola allowed Margaret to srcatch its side – as if removing parasites.
