This is not a mystery. Those squid suffered a fatal tear-out injury from being hooked by fishing gear. Squid don't have a lot of blood, it doesn't take a huge injury to be fatal. For some reason the wounded always migrate towards the shore. This coinsidence occurs with regularity.
