There are members in the F&G Commission who want to see this experimental fishery go forward and that position is supported by some Commission staff who want to reopen the Abalone Recovery Management Plan to allow such efforts. Despite the fact that the ARMP was over 10 years in the making and has been through CEQA and peer review there are large forces who wish to cash in by having commercial access to a remnant population of a recovering species. Concerned abalone sport divers in SoCal should be demanding that more efforts be placed on recovery of the SoCal stocks rather that allowing terminla fisheries for the last remaining remnants of this once plentiful resource. Stay alert and watch out because abalone prices and scarcity ensure that the dark side will always be after what little remains.
