I'm guessing that Phil's lens is the older pin-drive AF that
doesn't have a motor, and yours is the newer AF-S lens with a
motor. The AF-S lens focuses lightning fast, and at the reduced
f-stop with the teleconverter (f/5.6), the AF sensors in the camera
just can't keep up. Adm. Linda (my fiance) had that sort of
trouble with the AF-S 105. She switched to the 60mm when the AF-S
60 came out (pin-drive was not an option as she shoots D40 and D60
which don't do pin-drive AF).
