With most Nikon DSLRs you can reprogram them to use one the the
buttons on the back to trigger AF. You will need to reprogram your
fingers too, but it's really good to separate the focus and shutter
release functions.

Clinton's trick of removing the O-ring is a good one.

And the advice about Sola focus lights is good. For many years
I used Ikelite Mini-C lights. Not terribly expensive and there's
good moounting hardware from Ultralight. Downside is short
bulb life (25 hours). Then I won a Sola in the Monterey Shootout.
Adm. Linda borrowed it and I had to buy her one for Christmas.
I won another this year.
