About ten years ago there was a popular effort to create an amateur artificial reef in the Redondo Canyon. We called it the "Monument".

It was generally a bunch of cinderblocks piled up in a pyramid.
Some additional junk got added for the sake of humor.
As I recall there was a tank, a guitar (one of those fiberglass Ovation types) and an actual kitchen sink.

The thing lasted a few years before being reclaimed by the sea.

As I recall it eventually became home to many animals, and was quite different from season to season. Perhaps the finite little cubbies offered by cinderblocks were better than the open reef ball concept.

There is a reef there a bit farther out than most beach divers venture (165 fsw) that offers a similar habitat.
