an actual dive report |

our group of divers launched the kayaks out of Cabrillo beach and hit the outer kelp beds. I know this area is notorious for bad vis, but as I was dropping the anchor, I could see the top of the reef in 12 feet of water. We had 20' and better vis with 61 degree flat glassy water. My first thought was this area looks like SBI, heavy kelp, lots of inverts and huge schools of fish, and some large purple Urchin barrens. We got to observe commercial Urchin divers at work, they do a good job of raking up the urchins with little damage to the reef. Plus there was an army of large gamefish following them for the free pickings. A great day on the water with great conditions for diving.
