I'm sure you're aware of the deadly potential of mantis shrimp, but just to reiterate - DO NOT GET YOUR HANDS (OR ANY PART OF YOUR BODY) NEAR THESE GUYS!
An unforgettable experience when I was a kid working on sport boats happened off what was called Venice Reef. An angler brought up a Mantis shrimp wrapped in his monofiliment leader and before anyone could stop him, he reached for the shrimp. In a flash the shrimp struck with one of his cutters (called raptorial appendages) and made a clean slice from the guy's wrist up past the base of his thumb. There is a split second image in my mind from that moment of the sliced flesh and the dim white of either tendon or bone, then blood. Lots and lots of blood. Lifeguards came out and took the guy in to the beach for treatment.
So just a word to the wise - Mantis Shrimp are bad-assed dudes/dudettes.
