Divers,

If you have not already heard, the Magician Dive Boat has been sold! Captain Carl Mayhugh is its new Owner/Captain!
You can expect a short transition period while Captain Jerry passes the helm to Captain Carl.
Captain Carl's first Magician dive charters as its new owner and captain will be this upcoming weekend.
First OPEN BOAT will be Saturday, December 20. :-)
Shiny new dedicated phone: 949-500-4755
New email address: CaptainCarl at magicianscuba.com
The website address remains the same and Carl’s info will be changed over as time allows.
As a diver, I am extremely pleased that Captain Carl Mayhugh has chosen the Magician for his next chapter. Carl will be a wonderful asset to the Los Angeles area dive boat fleet!

Congratulations to you, Carl!

I have received some inquiries from folks asking about Captain Carl so he and I thought it may be helpful to share a little about him with you:

Captain Carl Mayhugh began working in the dive industry as Second Captain of the Horizon in San Diego, doing multi-day dive trips to the Channel Islands, offshore banks, the Islands off of Baja, and great white shark dive trips at Guadalupe Island. Carl took the opportunity to take over as Captain and Operations Manager at Lois Ann Dive Charters, and remained there until he bought his own dive boat. Carl holds a USCG 100GT Master License.

While he was in San Diego, Carl was a member of the Board of Directors for the San Diego Oceans Foundation and was in charge of the Wreck Alley Mooring Project for 3 years.

Carl worked for NOAA as a field biologist studying the green turtles in San Diego Bay and working as a shipboard scientist aboard the NOAA ship McArthur II. While aboard the McArthur II, he operated a deep water trawl for Scripps Institution of Oceanography and was a Marine Mammal Observer for the NOAA ORCAWALE Marine Mammal Survey. Carl had the opportunity to teach college level marine biology and marine field ecology at Prescott College’s research station in Bahia Kino, Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez.

Carl was chosen by the California Dept. of Fish and Game to be a member of the Regional Stakeholders Group and help design the South Coast Marine Protected Areas, and was the co-lead for the Science/Conservation-based Proposal.

Moving to Orange County, Carl began teaching marine science at the Ocean Institute and working as a Whale Watching Captain at Captain Dave’s Dolphin Safari in Dana Point. Carl moved to Avalon to take over as the Captain of the Scuba Cat and Manager of Catalina Divers Supply.

Carl moved back to the mainland 3 years ago to work as Captain Jerry Lewis’s relief captain aboard Magician dive boat and to be the Lead Whale Watching Captain at Harbor Breeze Cruises. Carl has since purchased the Magician dive boat and is running day and multi-day trips to the Southern Channel Islands and offshore banks.

He has a degree in Marine Conservation Biology, a Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies, and a Certificate in Ornithology. He is an AAUS Scientific Diver, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, and a member of the NOAA Large Whale Disentanglement Team for OC/LA.
