Actually, maggieD, that is the stern of the Palawan and the protrusion is the housing that held the prop bering and shaft of the vessel.
When the ship was cut down all of the superstructure and too much of the hull was removed and this has exacerbated the confusion as to bow/stern of the Palawan.
