Sargassum is taking over. Like most things, it has a growth cycle. Everyone gets excited when it appears the sagassum is dieing off, unfortunately that is the natural cycle. It will always come back. Also, since it reproduces best in the same habitat as the giant kelp, it's a competition for space on the reef. Unfortunately, right now it appears sargassum is out competing the macrocystis. It will never be eradicated, but if you're interested in doing something that may help slow it down, or at the very least help with dealing with future invasive species, LA Waterkeeper (www.lawaterkeeper.org) has started a project to monitor the spread of sargassum. They have set it up so anyone can contribute their observations. If you are interested in participating, contact Ian Jacobson (ijacobson@lawaterkeeper.org).
