Last night I read on the local internet news that the pelagic red crabs (also called tuna crabs) have washed ashore again in large masses along the Newport Beach and Laguna Beach beaches. So I got in my car early this morning to take some pictures. I heard numerous ambulances, and when I passed the dive shop and got to Shaw's Cove, there were police cars...not good. After taking several images of the crabs, there was one man sitting on the beach in solitude, holding a dive slate with dive tables on it (see attached image). I asked him if there had been an accident, and he told me that a dive student had drowned. VERY SAD. It's a wake up about the risks of recreational scuba. The sea conditions were not good...rough and choppy and probably very poor visibility, although the surf wasn't that high.
