Dive Report: Giant Stride Open Boat Saturday 6/17/17 |
Posted by J. Reeb on June 18, 2017 at 20:52:34: We headed out on the Giant Stride dive boat on yesterday to dive the local sites off the Socal coast. With grey June gloom in full bloom overhead, we motored past the LA Harbor Light and headed out to the Olympic wreck. After setting the hook on the wreck below, we headed down the anchor line to see what conditions awaited us. No matter how often I dive this wreck, the wonder of what we will find down there consistently fuels my fascination with this dive. The current benchmark term for good viz on the wreck is; "Well, it wasn't over sixty feet..." coined by Barry after a particularly good day. Today, Kev coined the opposite; I've seen it worse. After the wreck we opted for the oil rigs Elly and Ellen. While en route sunshine broke through and we enjoyed seeing several pods of dolphins breaking the surface nearby. Conditions on the rigs were fair, viz 15' with a light swell and a current running South to North. Below 50' there was an abundance of invertebrate marine life for which these rigs are famous. My dive buddies sure seemed to be enjoying themselves; https://www.instagram.com/p/BVdXwk2AUBV/ J.Reeb |
