According to Milton Love, genetic studies show that vermilion rockfish are actually 2 closely related species - vermilion and sunset rockfish. See page 248 of Certainly More Than You Want to Know About the Fishes of the Pacific Coast.

On Sept. 17, 2023, Phil Garner and I took our visiting Australian friend, Wayne Rosenboom, to Hawthorne Reef hoping that a deeper site might have better vis than sites we've been diving lately. The pinnacles of Hawthorne Reef are 0.4 miles off the west side of Palos Verdes Peninsula. The reef is in 85 ft. with the high point at 65 ft. Judging by Phil's photos from 2019, the reef has lost much of its invertebrate life. Although the day was overcast, we had ~25 ft. vis and 59 degrees. These striking vermilions are youngsters that may live to be 60 years old.
