If you're still stateside here's a bit of info: Moorea in late summer early fall will have whales (humpys) - this is done freediving. You've also got rays, sharks, and other assorted cetaceans to play with. Again all done without scuba.

There is Tiger diving and freediving (yup I know a bit sketch but fun) on Tahiti right by the Papeete airport.

Fakarava has excellent pelagics and is a scuba destination. Very very sharky as well as lots of mantas :)

French Polynesia in general has a lot of big stuff so plan for that and take advantage of it. We spent 5 weeks over there in 2019.
