Merry Passage said the octopus babies she found yesterday looked ready to hatch, so we returned to Golf Ball Reef this morning. The sea was choppy and the red tide had moved into the South Bay. We avoided diving in it until our safety stop. At one point I couldn't see Merry from a foot away. The reef was like a night dive and the octopus had already fled the scene. I found a second nest that was pretty far along. I took a few shots, and then handed it off to Merry. The tiny babies began hatching as she watched. I missed it...again.IM
