Cortes Bank, and San Clemente Island
aboard the Horizon
May 30-31, 2009
California hydrocoral (Allopora californica) from Tanner Bank California

May 30, 2009
Two dives at Tanner Bank, California
There was almost no swell and only a very lite breeze.  The first dive had a bit of current, but the second was calm.  The top 30 feet was a bit green, but below the visibility opened up to about 100 feet.  The water temperature was 53 ºF.

California Spiny Loster (Panulirus Interruptus) in a hole in the side of a Canyon at Cortes Bank, California

Two dives at Cortes Bank, California
Again only a lite breeze and almost no swell.   The canyons and eel grass that are normally surgy were calm.  Visibility was 60+ ft.  The water temperature was 53 ºF.  I only got decent pictures on the first dive.   On the second my camera was set for ISO 1600 so the pictures came out far to noisy to be  usable.

Dendraster excentricus (Pacific Sand Dollar, Common Sand Dollar, Western Sand Dollar, Sand dollar, Eccentric Sand Dollar) from Seal Cove, San Clemente Island, California

May 31, 2009
A early morning dive at Roca Entrada, Seal Cove, San Clenmente Island, California
After spending the night anchored in Sea Cove we move to the outsiide to a reef and rock Greg Grivetto calls Roca Entrada.  The boat was anchored over 60 feet of sand.  Everyone else went to the rock, however Idropped onto the sand and found the deepest Sand Dollar bed I have ever seen.  The 50+ ft. visibility helped make for some great photos.

Sebastes atrovirens (Kelp Rockfish) looking out from a hole at San Clemente Island, California

May 31, 2009
A dive at Swiss Cheese Reef, San Clemente Idland, California
This dive was just east of Seal Cove.  Swiss cheese is a reef with many long instersecting swim throughs.  I have seen that part of the site many times and I elected to stay on the edge of the sand and reef to take pictures.

Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) from China Point, San Clemente Island, California

May 31, 2009
A dive at China Point, San Clemente Island, California
China Point is a very "fishy" spot and a great place to see palagics in the summer when the water is warmer.  However the 55 ºF water syill had great visibility, but fewer fish than I usually see here.

Swell Shark (Cephaloscyllium ventriosum) below Pyramid Haed, San Clemente Island, California

May 31, 2009
A dive at Pyramid Head, San Clemente Island, California
Andrea Beck was in the water eary at this site saw a large Soupfin Shark up close as it cruised by her.  I spent most of the time on the wall and just on top.  I got some nice pictures of Kathryn Cody and Brian Hillyer as well.
