The regulator system provides air to the diver at a breathable pressure. Air from the tank at tank pressure is reduced by the first stage valve to an inter-stage pressure of around 10 bar above the ambient pressure of the environment. This intermediate pressure is converted to the pressure required for breathing in the second stage held in the diver's mouth.
