The OP described them as "DM want a be’s." I take that to mean that they were DM candidates doing audits with the OW class. DM-Cs are students, not working DMs, and they aren't entitled to any more freebies than any other student diver. Some DM-Cs think they get their expenses covered, but their instructor should set them straight.
In this case, shame on the instructor for not making right with the boat and then taking it up with the students later.
