I view them as lifeguards for divers. Monitor and react when needed. Nothing more, no less. In addition they are responsible for making sure all their passengers are aboard and accounted for before moving the boat. We do our own check system in addition to whatever method they use.

My DM is a crew member and she has responsibilities in addition to the above when it is our trip. If the crap hits the fan, she’ll be on the ball.

It is extremely rare that I have issue with any DM’s that come aboard to work with their group, Sport Chalet or otherwise. We seem to have a following of the same 6 SC DM’s so they know the boat and us well.

Occasionally we get the ego maniac DM that needs to show and tell the world how cool and experienced he is, which immediately wins him our undivided inattention.
