When its fairly small, especially with a long, shallow slope I wade in fins off. With a shore break or heavier surf, I go fins on as I want out of the surf zone fast and don't want to risk loss of control. I've never been to Monastery - what type of shore break? I've heard about the cobble, but I've also heard it gets deep fairly fast.
