I tried bringing up both images in Photoshop, where
the left one looked better. Then I tried doing a
little simple tweaking, and when I dragged the
midtones to the right in Levels, the right one got
really cool. The Garibaldi jumped right out at me.
And poking around in levels and looking at the
individual channels, it looks like the red channel
was adjusted independently of the other two in the
left picture. As Clinton said, there's not a lot
of detail in the dark end of the red channel. Maybe
that's an artifact of the scanner, maybe it's
something that was done after scanning.
