Except for your aversion to Nitrox and computers, I'm on the same page with you regarding self-reliance. Since I wreck dive exclusively, my only need for a buddy might be to remove/retrieve a particular artifact. Adherence to the "buddy system" demands at least 50% of my attention on him or her; more if he/she has less experience than me. Wreck diving demands 100% attention on the wreck and my penetration of it. I pay for that 100% when I'm on a charter wreck diving trip. As a certified Divemaster I will gladly buddy up with anybody. But get out your checkbook 'cause I won't do it freebee. One exception: a new member to our club, California Wreck Divers.
