I may be sticking my head out here, but let me give it a shot. Maybe the distinction here is that in the oil rigs incident, 2 divers made a deliberate choice not to acompany the third member of their team to the surface after that diver signaled that he wanted to abort the dive. The result was that the 3d diver was left in a defacto solo situation on his accent, with all the dangers and risks that solo diving involves. I'm not making a value judgment about this one way or the other, but that would seem to be the result. One of the principals that MHK seems to hammer consistantly is that if one diver in a team decides to abort, everyone aborts, no questions asked (remember our Santa Barbara dive back in March?), thus maintaining the integrity of the buddy system throughout the dive.
