Any meteorologists out there? Re: Santa Ana conditions

When I relocated to SoCal, I heard of the "Santa Ana" winds or ~conditions.
Then, someone (I think it was seahunt) said, the real name is "Santana" but everyone says Santa Ana because the winds come about from that direction.

What's the correct term? What are the reasons for these favorable conditions to occur? How can they be predicted?
