From what I've read, seahunt is right about the terminology.

Watch for a warm (relatively) dry wind from the NE in Fall and Winter, a high barometer, really clear air with the smog offshore. The NOAA WX radio code is "high winds below canyon mouths." These winds happen often and usually aren't a problem unless you have sinus problems. On occasion however they can blow at hurricane strength, though for a shorter time and over a smaller fetch.

For divers, the milder Santanas mean flat seas on mainland beaches and resulting good visibility. The stronger ones will really screw up the near side island dive sites. The North side of Catalina (normally calm and protected) gets blown out.

In November of 1984 I sat in an Avalon restaurant watching 60 mph winds blow directly into the harbor, blasting boats (with mooring attached) up onto the beach. Ruined a long dive weekend, and splintered a couple of boats.
