When you think your opinion through, you'll have to agree that even separated buddy divers spend some time together, and that share of their total time in the water equals the share of chance that, if something happens, they have someone to help them. Provided they are educated and experienced divers and know what to do when needed.
Which brings me to your second point. A newbie can only hope to have an experienced diver who takes them under his wings until they can fly by themselves (in a buddy team ;-))
