We shall see how sustainable such an economic system remains over the long span of history (not that i have much faith in our own mind you, but given the acute problems faced by certain cradle to grave welfare states, the question does beg consideration). BTW, our economy only partially protects the interest of capital. In our "free"-market arena, the protection bypasses the small businessman and goes only to those corporations large enough to purchase influence. With this move toward "globalization" and free trade, all bets are off for those European states.
