(Kevin asked) So, was I safer by myself or with a "buddy" ?

The question is really a red herring with no answer. There's no way to tell.

Certainly, if something had gone wrong, you're "safer" if you've got someone there to help out, even with a newer, out-of-shape diver as your buddy, than you would be alone.

The other side of the coin is wondering whether this buddy could hsave endangered you. IMHO, not if you'd sat down and discussed the dive plan ahead of time, executed said plan, and monitored each other throughout the dive. That's what a buddy team is supposed to do.

But there's really no finite answer to your question, IMHO.
