Randy, a cursory review of my past posts should convince you that I've been one of the most outspoken devil's advocates of the DIR diving system, defending my way over their way. Still on the learning curve, I'm now convinced that DIR gear configurations, practices, and principles are undeniably the safest way to dive, be it in deep, dark caves or benign kelp forests. The only thing that now prevents me from becoming totally DIR is the buddy thing. I enjoy diving independently, I do not enjoy diving with a buddy, even with my beloved daughter who is an instructor. Is "my way" safer than DIR? Absolutely not. Is my diving enjoyment more important than degrees of safety? Definitely yes. If you enjoy diving with a buddy then there's no reason for you to continue opposing the DIR system. Embrace it, my friend. It works.
