Just a thought but, perhaps rig your alternate with a traditional BC holder that covers the opening while transitiioning through the surf zone. Because you have it in two different locations may be a problem, but generally in my experience surf zone problems don't involve sharing air. I think the octo clip on your BC would be minimium excess equipment but necessary.
It's a good question, and made me think about it, thanks for the early sunday brain exercise.
