How to prevent sanding up of back up reg in DIR set up?

The problem in SoCal (and other) beach diving is that during the transit through the surf zone, any open orifice will collect sand. The DIR back up reg will be unplugged under the chin and will therefore pick up sand. A plug (like the common ball shaped reg retainers) would prevent that but would be in the way of a quick deployment of this reg.

What does the DIR knowledge base have to offer for this local (and not cave-specific) problem?
